Six Years

I write this evening to mark the anniversary (6 years) of my first day working at a Spa: my line of work ever since.

At 25 years old, never the guy to follow the status quo, although having learned and unlearned the same career expectations of “success” as my older-millennial brethren, I took a job at the desk in this desired environment for $9/hour.

I was living off a co-signed personal loan and had earlier that year strongly quit a needed job because of the unhappy, stressful environment and role. My priority was for a better, more helpful environment to my path: where I could best peacefully serve other people while also nurturing my soul. Desperate to start receiving an income, on my way home from an interview at a UPS Store, not one of my chosen environments but the closest thing to it I could attain in that moment, I received a phone call from a spa I’d applied to. Bingo! I was hired and entered into this line of work I never would have guessed has turned into what it has.

In all honesty, having resisted scheduled work for so long, I never would have bet how it would bloom me into the man I have become. In just over 2 short months, by November I knew that this was my career path and that I was ready to give it all I had. By the following September, I spoke my way into the Manager position, making $13/hour, and in the 5 years since, am making roughly $20/hour with other perks and benefits. Better yet, there is even further room for growth. Best yet, the fulfillment and ways it continues to bloom for me, are beyond my greatest gratitude.

I have recently spoken how I feel at a place where, at my current spa for just shy of 3 years, there isn’t much left for me in the way of personal fulfillment. I love this position and have balanced it with my personal life, leaving me only with my quest for a greater personal fulfillment: this lies in writing.

Since adolescence, dreaming in naive but prescient terms of becoming a “journalist” or “writer”, it’s always been my “calling” and passion. I feel it, have felt it, and want only now to fully honor it with what I know. This is the next step of what I can fully give myself to, as I have with Spa. . .

And what’s best, because of this Spa work, I know that I can. I can do everything and more, and live the dream-Life I feel called to lead. Listen within, make bold decisions, and you will never go wrong. Never.

Happy six years!

TRUE WISDOM (Tune Out Biased, Fear-Based News)! #AnitaMoorjani #Love

Sent in Weekly Email I receive from this wonderful healer>>

Dear Joshua,

There was a time – quite a long time ago – when I used to tune in to the news on TV, just to stay abreast of what was going on in the world. However, I no longer do that, because it disrupts the flow of my life. I’ve noticed that the way the news is presented these days has changed dramatically, and it no longer feels like we are getting unbiased information on what is actually going on in the world. On the contrary, it seems as though we are being bombarded with negative, fear based messages, presented to us repeatedly in different formats, over and over again.  After a while, it starts to feel like the world we live in is filled only with negative occurrences and fearful incidences, with very little of anything else. Do any of you relate to this?

If we are living in constant fear of everything that is happening outside, we start to carry this fear inside of us, and our own joy starts to erode. We bring whatever is inside with us wherever we go, and soon it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. In other words, we not only inadvertently spread this fear, we also start to look at the world through this filter of fear. And since fear begets fear, our experience of the world reflects it right back at us.

In actuality, there is a tremendous amount of beauty, love, magic, miracles, and magnificence in the world, but we stop seeing it when our world view is colored by this filter of fear.

One of the reasons I am driven to do what I do and share my message is because currently, in today’s political climate, a lot of us seem to be living in fear. That’s how I always used to be, and I know how it feels. I’ve since learned, however, that fear can be transcended, through love.

So how do we tap into the beauty and magic of this world again? One of the biggest lessons I learned from almost dying of cancer is that fear tends to sneak into the spaces where love is deficient. So the less love, passion, joy, purpose, or self-worth there is in my life, the more likely that fear will find its way into those spaces.

The first thing I’d suggest is to stop watching the news on TV. I’d much rather spend my time doing things I love, like walking by the ocean, listening to music, watching inspiring videos of other teachers, or watch a movie, or reading a good book. No matter how busy I am, I still make time to do these things for myself, because it’s an important part of loving and nurturing myself.

When I feel a little bit of fear peeking through the edges of my joy-filled life, I see it as an invitation to love more. I see fear as an invitation to ask ourselves, where are we not loving ourselves? Where are we not following our passion? Or living our purpose? How can we live a life that we love?

Much love,

In certain ways, I am already living the life I’ve imagined. A simple and deep, far-reaching gratitude is truly a cure of perspective. What you have is enough. Who you are is always more than enough: your cup runneth over.

Marcus Aurelius -Human Being’s Work Nature

Aurelius writes:

At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”

To the mind’s natural protestation that staying under the blankets simply feels nicer, Aurelius retorts:

So you were born to feel “nice”? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren’t you running to do what your nature demands?

Our nature, he insists, is to live a life of service — to help others and contribute to the world. Any resistance to this inherent purpose is therefore a negation of our nature and a failure of self-love. He writes:

You don’t love yourself enough. Or you’d love your nature too, and what it demands of you.

Many centuries before psychologists identified the experience of “flow” in creative work, he considers a key characteristic of people who love what they do:

When they’re really possessed by what they do, they’d rather stop eating and sleeping than give up practicing their arts.

Is helping others less valuable to you? Not worth your effort?

He revisits the subject in another meditation:

When you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, remember that your defining characteristic— what defines a human being — is to work with others. Even animals know how to sleep. And it’s the characteristic activity that’s the more natural one — more innate and more satisfying.

Election 2016

People get touchy & defensive when discussing politics, or would rather not entirely, but why? Certainly people have no issue discussing the Kardashians, the Bachelor or otherwise inane celebrity news. Politics are the most important issues facing our world, our country, and ourselves. Get informed!!

(My own, ever evolving opinion: Normally, I do not vote believing our system sadly is corrupt & that it’s an illusion of choice for puppets of their respective “party” & the mega wealthy corporate donors to their campaigns.

For those saying they don’t like either candidate, Trump beat a crowded field of 18 against all odds, rules & establishment “elite”. The blow-back only makes him stronger because people see the deck is stacked like they’ve never seen before. He is no puppet, that’s for sure. He is not perfect, that’s for sure.

Hillary, despite how nice it would be to have the first female president, beat a man who has much more support (Bernie), b/c of a rigged system of super-delegates (i.e. political insiders) who picked her & pushed her over the edge. This amidst being investigated by the FBI for irresponsibly & illegally combining her work/personal email server & leaving top secret gov’t information wide open to hacking (which it likely was), and then as we’ve recently heard, blatantly lying about returning all of the appropriate emails to them & numerous other things in regards to this.

The world is blowing up around us, & we need action, whether or not you like his tone, & not the politically correct madness that is currently guiding our country.

Looking forward to the choice of the people.)
